Colonial Yangon, former Rangoon, still maintains its charm with wide tree lined avenues and friendly residents. The Shwedagon Pagoda, which towers almost 100 meters above the street, dominates the city of Yangon. This stupa is believed to be have been built more than 2500 years ago. Inle Lake, the jewel of Shan State, is sheltered among the hazy Blue Mountains. The lake, about 900 meters above sea-level, is studded with floating islands and water birds. Inle Lake is famous for its unique one-leg rowers, floating villages and waterfowl. As you are rowed through the shallow waters of the lake, your lens will capture the enchanting faces of the children and their parents in their stilt houses. One of the most fascinating places to watch the daily life of the people of “the countryside is in their markets. You will take your best photos of the tribal people as they come down to market to sell their luscious vegetables, fruits and flowers.

As a longtime fan and user of medium format cameras, he suggested we offer a trip that would give our clients-who are mainly 35mm shooters-a chance to use new-generation, state-of-the-art medium format digital cameras provided by several manufacturers. Furthermore, he proposed that we do so on a trip he would lead to his two favorite photo locations in Asia—Cambodia and Myanmar. We agreed to give it a try.Cambodia & Myanmar—A Digital Medium Format Adventure (February 9-23, 2011) offers you the opportunity to visit two photogenic Southeast Asian countries, experiment with digital medium format equipment, and travel with a veteran photo leader well-versed not only in the destination but in both 35mm and medium format photography.Whether you’re a 35mm photographer who would like to experiment with medium format, or you’re currently shooting medium format and want to “test drive” new equipment, this tour is sure to expand your photographic horizons. Throughout the trip, James will provide hands-on instruction and discuss the relative merits of both 35mm and medium format photography.

Please note: while medium format cameras will be available to trip participants to use, this trip is still a typical Photo Safaris tour in all other respects. Therefore, participants will want to bring their own photography equipment to use.

We’ll travel to Cambodia and Myanmar’s most spectacular photo spots to explore these two cultural centers of Southeast Asia. We’ll photograph a bounty of subject matter, including pagodas, stupas and palatial temples, as well as monks in saffron-colored robes, bustling markets and women strolling with colorful parasols. And, we’ll spend three full days in and around spectacular Angkor Wat where we’ll photograph early in the morning before the crowds arrive and then explore lesser-known temples and locales.

Experience the beauty and mystery of Southeast Asia while learning about the stunning image resolution offered by digital medium format photography. This trip departs in early 2011 so don’t delay—call today to reserve your place!

Ever since Adobe released Photoshop CS5, I’ve been asked several times which of its new features I think are the best. There are a number of new features. Some I’ll probably never use (such as “puppet warp”) but some are truly game changing. I’ve now spent some time with CS5 and I’ve come up with my list of THE FIVE (and ½) BEST NEW FEATURES IN PHOTOSHOP CS5.

1. Hands down, my vote for the best new feature in Photoshop is Refine Edge (also called Refine Mask, depending on how you access this). Masking—the ability to apply an adjustment to one select area—is the primary reason I go to Photoshop. As the name implies, Refine Edge allows precise adjustment of the mask edge, the transition area between masked and not-masked areas. It gathers into one panel a number of ways to deal with simple masks, but then adds methods for the most complex masks. Two features within Refine Edge are amazing: Smart Radius and the Radius Brush.

2. Content Aware Fill gets my vote for the #2 spot. This has been shown on the web with lots of razzle-dazzle, but it does indeed have a place in the toolbox of image corrections. It makes cloning and/or healing larger areas far easier. Just in passing, it’s now the default behavior of the Spot Healing Brush.

3. The next three features are new to both Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom 3′s Develop Module, since they share the same RAW conversion engine. Feature #3 is the new 2010 Process Version. Yes, Adobe has rewritten the math beneath their RAW converter. There is a visible improvement in how RAW files are demosaiced, as the new process is sharper and less noisy.

4. Feature #4 is the new noise reduction, which is also found in Lightroom 3. Adobe has taken a giant step forward compared with where it was previously. The new noise reduction lives in the RAW converter in both programs, the most non-destructive location possible to apply noise reduction. All third party noise reduction programs work on standard file formats, not RAW images. Adobe’s new version is so good that I doubt I’ll be using any other noise reduction software.

5. The #5 place is filled by the new Lens Profile Corrections (also in Lightroom 3). Profiles have been made for many Nikon and Canon lenses (and Adobe promises more to come, while publishing a free “do-it-yourself” profile maker) that automatically correct for distortion, chromatic aberration and lens vignetting.

So what’s with the “and ½” bit? It’s that CS5 is now available as a 64-bit program for Macs. CS4 was already 64-bit for Windows machines, so now both PCs and Macs have the advantages that 64-bit software offers. In terms of Photoshop, the big advantage is the better use of RAM and the ability to address amounts of RAM over 3 GB.

TANNER TIPS

Even though I work with RAW files to create my final images I shoot RAW plus large JPEG. I do that for two reasons. The first reason simply has to do with the ease of access of JPEG files. I do a lot of street photography where I might want to share images immediately with people. If I have my lap top with me (which I often do) I can immediately share high quality JPEGS that have been created by the camera.

But there is another reason why I always shoot RAW plus JPEG. The camera can only create a RAW file…. it can’t read or process the RAW file. It just assigns your white balance choice to the RAW file data so that it defaults to that white balance when it opens in the RAW converter. On the other hand, your camera can create, read and process JPEGS. Most new digital cameras have many choices for controlling the processing of JPEGS created by the camera. On my Canon cameras in the menu these JPEG processing choices are called “Picture Styles” (Nikon calls these “Picture Controls”). In addition to monochrome I have seven other possible “Picture Style” presets for JPEG processing. These “Picture Style” presets allow me to control the contrast, saturation, color tone and sharpness of each processed JPEG. Based on testing in different shooting situations I have used the “Picture Style” controls to create JPEG processing settings and presets that have the look and feel of color and contrast that I want in my post processed, finished file. For example I have JPEG “Picture Style” presets for landscape, low light landscape, street photography in quiet light, street photography in hard light, for landscape night photography, and a “Picture Style” I use for photographing people in low light in bars.

If I am sharing the images immediately or sharing instant prints from my Polaroid Pogo printer then these shared images are finished by the camera in a way that relates to my personal vision and style. If I am not immediately sharing images in the field then my final processed files are worked up from the RAW files. In that case I have another potentially powerful use for these camera processed JPEGS. I use them as a reference file for RAW file processing and editing.

On our workshops we find that not many photographers are taking advantage of these camera JPEG processing settings. I strongly encourage you to find these controls in the menu of your camera and test the different settings in different shooting situations to find specific color and contrast “looks” that you like. It can be so difficult to remember the vision you had for the shot in the field when you finally are back at home and get around to working up finished versions of your images – particularly if you like to work from the RAW file like I do. “Picture Style” and “Picture Control” settings in your camera’s menu can go a long way in helping you to achieve your personal vision and personal style for each shot.

2010 WORKSHOPS

Big Bend National Park is Craig’s favorite place in the world. As you can see from the slideshow, it is a place of arresting beauty. Its also a location that offers photographic opportunities beyond the grand landscape. One of our favorite locations we visit on the workshop is the ghost town of Terlingua, Texas . Terlingua may be the closest thing to a hideout left in the lower 48. This magical desert paradise offers up amazing opportunities to photograph people, architecture and much more.

We are very excited about our upcoming Big Bend National Park Workshop October 16 – 22, 2010. We only have a few spaces left. We would love to have you join us in Big Bend.
“Correspondence collects a moving series of images in which atmospheric and terrestrial phenomenon are brought into poetic alignment with one another, creating a felt connection both within and without. An exchange of reception and projection unlocks our powers of intuition. A communion of sorts takes place and is reenacted with each viewing. The act of bringing the inside into alignment with the outside is a magical act. This call and echo establishes a vital correspondence. These images are an invitation to look more carefully, to see more clearly and more deeply and in many more ways.”

Condensation

“Condensation reveals a mysterious series of images, hovering on the brink of abstraction, stripped of everything nonessential, leaving little more than pure essence. These photographs are not only about the light-filled spaces they represent, but also the inner state of illumination passing through them brings. With extraordinary simplicity and directness, they lead us down a path of perception encouraging us to turn inward and take a mystical journey through ever increasing stages of awareness; thinking, associating, self-reflecting, centering, meditating, praying, and contemplating.”

Hey Everybody,

Thank you for your support of The Mindful Eye!

IMPORTANT NOTE

Over the last two years many of you have generously asked how you can directly support the web site….. without taking a workshop. Thank you!

Our workshop program has exclusively paid all of the expenses related to creating content, building, updating and maintaining the structure of the site, and covering bandwidth cost to deliver the free content to you from our server.

We now have over ten thousand members worldwide and our expenses have dramatically grown. Its no longer feasible for workshops and Google ads alone to foot the bill for TME’s expenses.

Future changes are coming soon to TME that will help the site to be more self sustaining. But in the short run we have launched our first direct affiliate program with one of our longest running sponsors, B&H Photo and Video.

On the TME home page, in the left column under sponsors, you will find a search box for B&H. You can either type your search request in the box and click GO or just click on the ad directly to visit the B&H site. By ordering from B&H online you will be directly supporting TME. This is a simple way, on a purchase you are already going to make, to support this site and to be able to do it in a way that so many of you have asked about – without taking a workshop.

So please, the next time you need a new camera body or lens or any photo gear, visit our friends at B&H and order online by traveling through the TME B&H portal on our home page. In the near future we will have a TME buyers page that highlights all of the gear that we personally use and regularly recommend. We will notify you when that page at B&H is launched. Thank you again for being here and for being the most important part of the TME experience.

I also want to say a huge thank you to B&H for being my camera store of choice for the last twenty years and for supporting photographers all around the world with amazing selection and quality of service.

TANNER TIPS

This week’s tip is about becoming more creative . . .

Become more creative by limiting your choices. It is counterintuitive but much of our creativity gets stifled by waiting too long to act. Having too many choices can promote indecision. What are some ways you can limit your choices as a photographic artist?…..Just take one lens. Give yourself an extremely short deadline. For instance…take a walk through a subject rich environment and take a picture every 30 seconds. Limit yourself to one subject for the day. Make it something you can carry with you. Limit yourself to a very small space. Limit yourself to black and white. Limit your self to a square crop. Combine three or four of these limits. Make your own list of choice limits to become more creative. Click here to read a great article about the potential creative power of limits.

Its written by a writer, for writers and about writing but another very powerful way to become more creative is to play and practice in other areas of the arts.

WORKSHOPS

In workshop news there are only a few spaces left now on our Big Bend National Park and Death Valley National Park workshops. These are our only workshops with space left for 2010. We will not be returning to Big Bend National Park or Death Valley in 2011 so 2010 is the year to join us in these stunning desert parks. Hope to see you on a TME workshop soon.

Thank you again for your support of TME.

Infrared photography is the focus of a group exhibition at the new Maine Media Gallery in July. Four Visions in Different Light: Susan Bloom, Jill Enfield, Elizabeth Opalenik, and Theresa Airey is now on view through July 25, with a closing reception on Tuesday, July 20 from 6:30-8pm.

These four talented photographers have united to put together a show that strives to demonstrate how many different perspectives and interpretations there can be for one medium. Infrared photography allows artists to create images that make infrared light-waves discernible, even though they are beyond the visible spectrum.

By using infrared film or adapted digital cameras, these photographers allow us to see what was once invisible. Theresa Airey says, “I like to show the world as we know it in a ‘different light’, one that is more symbolic of the mood or the feeling in the landscape, rather than the realism of the scene.”

Each of the four artists provides a unique insight into the many facets of infrared, and has decades of experience working with infrared photography. The work they present in the exhibition includes figure studies, landscapes, and photographic collages. Three of the women “Susan Bloom, Jill Enfield, and Elizbeth Opalenik” are instructors at Maine Media Workshops.

Maine Media Gallery is on the first floor of the Shepherd Building, 18 Central Street, Rockport Village. The gallery’s 2010 exhibition season is generously sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank.

Brenton Hamilton Releases Book of Cyanotypes

Brenton Hamilton, Maine Media faculty member, recently released a new book of his work entitled The Blue Poet Dreams.

Published through Blurb by the non-profit organization Obscura, the book showcases more than a decade of work stemming from Brenton’s meticulous dedication to the 19th-century cyanotype process. According to his website, Brenton “chooses this antique medium to render his one-of-a-kind dreamlike visions in an equally unique and intense hue.” His work combines human anatomy, botanical imagery and astronomy to create arrangements that are both intriguing and provocative.

Brenton Hamilton has been a fixture at Maine Media, guiding students as a mentor for more than 15 years. He is Chair of Maine Media College’s Photography Professional Certificate Program and an instructor for the Young Artists Program in photography.

He has been recognized several times in the Best of Photography and Picture of the Year International competitions for his still photography and multimedia work.

His latest project, A Family at Play, follows the Beckwith-Cohen family as they all perform in the Rochester Children’s Theatre production of Peter Pan.

Too much of the time we consider our subject first and then think about the light. I encourage you to first see and identify the qualities of light that are existing and available to you and then think about which subjects will work well in those qualities of light. As a photographer I almost always consider quality of light first. I am also constantly looking for ways to make light more layered and multi dimensional. To see one of the ways I work with multi dimensional lighting and how I find it in the most harsh light of the day check out this From Start to Finish episode that posted in March.

WORKSHOPS

In workshop news for 2010 only our Big Bend and Death Valley workshops have space left and there are only a few spaces left on each workshop.

Death Valley and Big Bend are Craig’s two favorite landscape locations in the world. He has been visiting, photographing and teaching in these parks for twenty years. Big Bend and Death Valley are two of our best Landscape based workshops. Here is what past participants have to say…

“This is my second workshop with Craig and Marti. On the day I came back, I signed up for another one for next year. Craig and Marti lead very special workshops. They are made of several key ingredients that make the workshop a wonderful experience. They know the area well and selected great places to shoot. The time during non-shooting sessions was dedicated to photography education and image critique that I think was critical to the success of the workshop. Finally, the group of participants were great caring people, each with a different style of photography, from whom I learned a lot. I highly recommend the workshops led by Craig and Marti for anyone looking for inspiration and a great learning experience.” Yair (Big Bend National Park 2009).

“The TME Big Bend workshop — a week of getting up at 5, spent with people you have never met met, combined with instructors who get it … and add a great location …. equals a week that you won’t forget and will change what you do when you put the camera up to your eye. Do it. You won’t be sorry.” Chris (Big Bend National Park 2009)

“I thought the quote by Y. B. Yates was applicable to your teaching styles and the TME workshop experience: “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” Both

of you were fire starters in my photographic journey. .“ — Chuck D. (Death Valley National Park Workshop participant 2009).

“The Death Valley National Park workshop was superb! I came out of it not only with great photos, but with improved photographic vision and techniques. Everything was excellent: The locations and outings, the instructions and demonstrations, and the individual photo critique. Craig created a great atmosphere in which we all learned from each other as well as from him… the teaching was supportive, skillful, and excellent. I would recommend this workshop enthusiastically to anyone looking to boost their landscape photography to the next level.“ — Saul S. (Death Valley National Park Workshop participant 2008).

When I teach a workshop, the first question I ask each student is,
“What is your goal?”

Setting goals on a workshop (and of course in life) is important. If
you know where you are going, it’s easier to get there.

When setting out to make a photo, setting goals is important, too.

At my last workshop at Light Workshops, photographing horses on the beach was one
of the events. I told the students my goal was to get a shot of a
horse with all the hooves off the ground. Having that goal, I told
that students that I had to:
· set my camera on AI focus (focus tracking);
· set my shutter speed to 1/1000 sec, or higher;
· have a clean background;
· set my camera on rapid frame advance;
· take a lot of shots!

Well, we all did the same thing . . . and we all got the shot, because
we all set the same goal.

Set goals, and you’ll get there.

I hope to see you the Click! The California Photo Festival later year.

Explore the light,
